Chris Hemsworth: A (Comedic) Star is Born

Writer's picture: Robyn Murphy Robyn Murphy

In recent years, Chris Hemsworth has become most known for his portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In spite of a flurry of cinematic efforts outside fo the MCU, Hemsworth's IMDB page is still dominated with his work as the God of Thunder. Though Hemsworth has embarked on numerous dramatic efforts in recent years, including Ron Howard's "In The Heart of The Sea" and "Rush", it has been his recent forays into more comedic work which has caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Hemsworth has come to show a natural talent for the comedic genre in recent years, specifically in Paul Feig's "Ghostbusters" reboot in which he shown amongst a cast of well known, established, and respected comedic forces. It has become clear that Hemsworth is far more than just a pretty face, and that he is capable of carrying comedic narratives successfully, as well as being able to be the dashing leading man.

In F. Gary Grey's "Men In Black: International", Hemsworth portrays the cocky and charismatic Agent H, the heroic star of the London branch of the MIB. The character is as charming as he is funny, and it is his characterisation, and the electric chemistry which is shares with screen partner, and recent frequent collaborator, Tessa Thompson which are the true highlights of the film. Hemsworth and Thompson's comedic timing is impeccable, and with input Kumail Nanjiani's adorable Pawny the trio make for an electric and often hilarious on screen group.

The film itself is an enjoyable Summer movie, and while it is certainly an entertaining 2 hour outing, the plot is predictable, and within the first half hour/ 45 minutes of the film you end up knowing exactly how the narrative is going to play out. In spite of its inevitable predictability, if you see this film I have no doubt that you will leave feeling both entertained and incredibly impressed with the two leads.

The on screen chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and `Tessa Thompson has been apparent since their first outing together in Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok", a film in which audience's also first got the chance to experience Hemsworth's own sense of humour. It has been noted that Hemsworth had a significant influence on the development of his Thor's humour in more recent films, something which can once again be seen in this film, as it is clear that Hemsworth himself has a significant influence on his character. The pair buzz off of each other very well, and it is clear to see that they have built up a strong friendship off screen through subsequent projects together, as the friendship, and hints of further affection between the pair, is strong in the narrative.

Overall, I'd give the film a solid 3/5 for out and out enjoyability and the performances of the leads. Its far from being the perfect film, but if you're looking for an enjoyable two hours of escapist entertainment in what is shaping up to be a dreary summer, then id say its well worth the ticket price! And don't be put off the film if you've never seen any of the other Men In Black Movies, this film stands totally independent from them.
