5 Great Romantic Comedies To Watch On Netflix During Lockdown

Writer's picture: Robyn Murphy Robyn Murphy

While the current situation is difficult on everyone, in the majority of cases it has allowed for families and housemates to spend more time at home together. When all this is over, we'll all remember the time when we were asked to come together to stay apart. A long time favourite of quiet, cosy days at home, Netflix has provided us with quality entertainment for years now, but the sheer amount of choice on offer can often be overwhelming. More often than not, I find myself spending more time scrolling through the choices than actually watching a film or series. So to help with that, I've picked some of the best romantic comedies on Netflix, that have often been overlooked, to help keep you entertained whilst in lockdown.

1. Set It Up

"Set It Up" follows over-worked and under-appreciated assistants Charlie (Glenn Powell) and Harper (Zoey Deutch) who, on a mission to gain more free time from their ruthless bosses, use all the knowledge they've accrued of them to set them up, hoping that one they've fallen in love, their work lives will be easier. Powell and Deutch work amazingly together, and the film is a great one to enjoy, especially now so many people are away from that harsh office environment!

2. Little Italy

If, like me, you love the incredibly cheesy films Netflix puts out every Christmas, then you will love this. Set in Toronto the film centres around childhood best friends Leo (Hayden Christensen) and Nicky (Emma Roberts) as they reconnect when Nicky returns home from London, and follows the family feud that has torn their previously inseparable families apart. Revolving around two love stories and two pizzerias, the film is just as cheesy as your favourite pizza topic, both is nonetheless a worthwhile investment of 90 minutes of your unlimited quarantined time!

3. Fallin Inn Love

This film follows city girl Gabriela (Christina Milian) who enters a contest on a whim and wins a rustic Inn in New Zealand. Grown tired of her life in the States Gabriela flies to New Zealand hoping to spend some time in her new luxury place, only to discover that it is a ruin. Put in contact with local contractor Jake Taylor (Adam Demos) the pair set out to renovate the Inn, and chaos and romance ensues. Perfect for any Netflix binging session the film captures all the love and warmth of a small rural town. That, in combination with the great chemistry between Demos and Milian, makes this one you don't want to miss.

4. The Last Summer

This film centres on a group of friends in Chicago as they embark on their last summer at home before going to college. The film centres on the group as new friendship and relationships unfold whilst old ones are questioned and as the group come to terms with what they want to do with their live now that their high school days are over. While it might not sound as fun and upbeat as the others on this list, this isn't the case, and the film is perfect for looking ahead to the, hopefully, great summer that will be had once this lockdown is over. This film will definitely leave you feeling good and ready for summertime adventures.

5. The Perfect Date

This rom-com follows Brooks (Noah Centineo) who, in an attempt to save money for college, creates an app through which girls can hire him to be their dates for any occasion. The film follows Brooks on a string of funny and outrageous date requests and through a blossoming friendship, and possible romance with one date Celia (Laura Maranio). It's not the best film ever made, but it is certainly fun and light hearted and perfect for your next movie marathon!
